1984, it finally happened. Having dreamed of it for almost a quarter of a century, I finally signed my first recording contract with Atlantic Records. They signed me on 4 demos, but one song in particular “Love Grammar” was the one that I and indeed Ahmet Ertegun (legendary founder of Atlantic) believed would launch my career in America.
I had a vision of what kind of record I wanted to make. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy for a rookie to break into the billboard charts, where it seemed every chart position was occupied by a platinum selling act. I would strive to make a record with soul and integrity and hopefully that little extra ingredient would give me a fighting chance, a record that would make you want to pull off the road, crank it up and listen!
Throughout my life and career I have tried to be honest and say what I feel whatever the consequence. If I felt it needed to be said, I said it. The moral is…There are no rules but ignore them at your peril.
